AI prompts for human interaction

What might be possible if we approached our interactions with our colleagues using everything we’re learning about how to effectively prompt ChatGPT?

Like many others, I’ve recently found myself gravitating to content with titles like this: ’50 Best ChatGPT prompts to unleash AI’s potential’ and ’10 tips to take your ChatGPT interactions to the next level.’   But the more I’ve read, the more I’ve realized that the greatest value of the lessons we’re learning in this area might be found in applying them to our human interactions in the workplace.

After all, how many times have you delivered or been on the receiving end of workplace communication that is unclear, ambiguous, or lacks context?  How many times has this resulted in unnecessary spin, missed expectations or inadequate work product?

So, to test this out, please read these top 8 tips for effective #chatGPT prompts below – but substitute ‘your team member’ every time ‘Chat GPT’ appears.

1️⃣ Start with a clear goal – Determine what you want ChatGPT to achieve, whether it’s providing information, providing a point of view, or solving a problem.
2️⃣ Define the audience and channel – You should clearly tell ChatGPT the audience and the channel for which the information is intended.
3️⃣ Provide context – Provide enough relevant background information so that ChatGPT understands the bigger picture and how this fits within it, and can respond accordingly.
4️⃣ Be concise - Be brief and to the point. Avoid using unnecessary words or information that will confuse ChatGPT or delay the response.
5️⃣ Be specific – Be specific about the information you want ChatGPT to provide and the format you want it in. Avoid making very general requests that could generate many possible answers.
6️⃣ Avoid ambiguity – Avoid using words with multiple meanings or phrases that can be interpreted in different ways. If ChatGPT starts generating solutions that reflect a misinterpretation of the assignment, rephrase your instructions to ensure clarity.
7️⃣ Use examples – Providing examples of the desired output can help ChatGPT better understand what you’re looking for.
8️⃣ Employ effort – The less effort you put into briefing ChatGPT, the less effort ChatGPT seems to put into it.

AI is an exciting development with the potential to vastly increase our productivity and streamline work flows so we can all work more efficiently and effectively. But let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater, by overlooking the areas for improvement in our human interactions at work.
